Description: Think of the revolving door as a portal: you can move through it, you can see through it. As part of a study of business and office spaces, artist Charlie Citron explored the hermetic quality of revolving doors. In a building, particularly in an urban setting, the moment within the revolving door can be the transition between public and private. Out in the landscape of the sculpture garden, however, the door is divorced from any specific spaces it might connect. The nature of the transition, of the portal, is up to the viewer's interpretation. Indeed, a favorite view in this site looks up through the framework to the sky above, access not granted in any literal revolving door. This series began when Citron was first a resident at Sculpture Space in 1990 and then continued in his 1999 residency. Visiting from Amsterdam, Netherlands, he was also a resident in 1991 and 1992.
