Description: Artist Anssi Taulu's wife, Sirpa, and 3 children Viljami (12), Inka (16), and Maria (18) all helped to construct Top. A local business donated and delivered over one hundred used car tires, and Taulu got everyone involved. Working at Sculpture Space while visiting from Finland in the hot summer of 2015, it took them just over 3 weeks to complete the artwork. The result is in the shape of a toy, the spinning of a top on its axle reminding us of the spinning of the wheels once covered by these tires. As these "retired" tires no longer spin on those wheels, this top is at rest for the moment, balanced on its side. Taulu associates both forms, top and wheel, with "movement, joy, development and life circle." This sculpture continues some of the ideas and forms from the sculpture Side Effect, an indoor floor to ceiling piece also made of rubber inner tubes and straps, created while Taulu was in residence at Sculpture Space in 2014.
