Description: As you stand on the deck, the supports for this fictitious runway frame your view of the surrounding landscape and the Air Force runway in the distance. Yet, you may also be viewed. For her research, artist Jenny Polak looked at satellite images of the base. This led her to create something that might be seen through surveillance above. At night the feeling of a runway is further highlighted by the blinking lights making it apparent even in the dark. A resident at Sculpture Space in 1995, Polak is deeply interested in the issues surrounding immigration. This is influenced strongly by her own family's migration. Many of her works present fictitious solutions to these issues. For example, she has created hiding places in plain sight, temporary housing for migrant workers, and impromptu settings for activism.
